The teen who invented colour-changing stitches to detect infections

Hey kids, in this video we meet 17-year-old Dasia Taylor who invented suture thread that changes colour, from bright red to dark purple, whenever a surgical wound has become infected.

The Iowa teen began working on the project in October 2019, after her chemistry teacher shared information about state-wide science fairs with her class. As she developed her sutures, she won awards at several such fairs, before advancing to the national stage.

Until finally, this past January, Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, one of the most prestigious science and maths competitions for high school seniors in the US.

Nevertheless, despite her prowess in science, we learn the 17-year-old has her heart set on a legal career later down the line, believing it will play to both her strengths in research and in serving communities.
