The total number of government-employed people increased during July, with 92 additional people joining the public sector, the Cyprus Statistical Service said in a report.

This represents a 0.2 per cent year-on-year increase, bringing the total number of people employed by the government to 52,957 people.

However, the above number represents both permanent workers as well as temporary workers who have been contracted by the government.

Overall, the downward trend for people permanently employed by the government continued, with 998 fewer permanent employees now employed by the state. This represents a 3.6 per cent decrease year-on-year.

Emergency personnel meanwhile increased by 7.4 per cent year-on-year, with an additional 1,234 being hired by the government, reaching a total of 17,898 emergency staff during July.

The Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises (Stek) is in favour of alternative forms of tourism, according to a statement by the association.

The association said that it is working in conjunction with the Cypriot government, the European Union, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Cypriot church, the Greek Ministry of Culture, the Greek church and various academic institutions in Greece and Cyprus to achieve this goal.

The association also noted that it has been assigned a challenging task in implementing a tourist strategy tasked with combining culture and religion.

A pair of high rise buildings will be constructed within the current property of the Landmark Hotel in Nicosia after they received the green light from the environmental authority of Cyprus.

The project, titled ‘Landmark Project – Office and Residential Tower Development’, will involve the construction of one 17 storey residential tower, one 16 storey commercial building and a private 1,500 square metre square.
