Phaneromenis70 participating in first New European Bauhaus Festival

Local cultural centre and NGO Phaneromenis70 is organising a series of events this June titled Topophilia II for its participation in the first New European Bauhaus festival. Supported by the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, the ministry of education and the Nicosia Tourist Board, numerous interactive and participatory events will take place until June 21.

The festival of the New European Bauhaus aims to bring people together to discuss the building of a sustainable and inclusive future through interdisciplinary collaboration. It is an initiative organised by the European Commission, with presentations and actions taking place across Europe. The thematic concerns of New European Bauhaus resonate with the values of Phaneromenis70, with Topophilia II being the NGO’s first participation in this network of change.

The programme includes workshops, discussions, walks and art presentations about the coexistence of nature and culture in Nicosia. Activities will focus on the historical evolution of the city, its urban ecology and its potential future.

On Friday, the opening of the exhibition Sketching Nicosia will take place in the Library of Phaneromenis (Phaneromenis 46-48). It will present the results of the successful workshops that took place in May, led by artists Chloe Finn, Michael Charalambous and Nicoletta Papamichael. An online discussion will also take place between Brussels and Nicosia at 11am EEST discussing the participation in the festival and relaying news between the two cities.

On June 20, the events continue with a conversation inviting the local visual arts community to discuss the coexistence of humans, plants and animals in Nicosia, as well as a screening of short films. How can the element of water help us read this discourse in the development of Nicosia’s built environment over the past centuries?

The project will conclude on June 21 with the presentation of Head and Hand – Foun[d]ain (2021-2022) by Kyriaki Costa, in collaboration with NiMAC. The public is invited to meet at 6pm in front of the Arts Centre and take a guided walk with Antigone Michael to a water tank near the Nicosia District Court, where a discussion will be held in relation to Head and Hand – Foun[d]ain.

Participants will be invited to share their perspectives regarding the actions that can be taken to improve the conditions of coexistence between people, plants, and animals in Nicosia to create beautiful and sustainable places together.
