Fleeting world: ‘Seven Silent Songs’ by Avish Khebrehzadeh

What do a baby rhino, soldiers on stilts and humans dragging a whale mean to Iranian artist Avish Khebrehzadeh?

In this video, we observe her working on her animated short film, ‘Seven Silent Songs’ and her wall-sized drawing, ‘Tree of Life in Blue,’ temporarily installed at Washington DC’s National Gallery of Art, explaining how her images connect with the transient quality of life.

Born in Iran, Khebrehzadeh has lived in Madagascar, the UK, Italy and the United States, with her experience of migrating to different countries imbuing her work with a strong sense of dislocation and unease.

In her drawings, paintings and animation, Khebrehzadeh has been known to use unusual media, such as olive oil and resin on paper. Her themes often invoke an imagined reality, strongly tied to her personal experiences, geographical and psychological disquiet.

Khebrehzadeh’s works are included in public collections that include: GAM, Turin; MONA, Tasmania, Australia; MACRO Museum, Rome; MAXXI Museum, Rome; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
