Free summer film screenings in Larnaca

1

It’s no summer if there aren’t open-air film screenings to enjoy under the warm evening sky. And outdoor film screenings are back, including in Larnaca, where the Larnaca Cinema Society is preparing a packed programme in the garden of the Pierides Museum.

Starting from June and lasting all the way until September, films from around the world and in numerous languages will be shown at the museum’s outdoor space. The first screening will take place on June 22, featuring the French film Divorce Club. The 2020 comedy follows Ben, a married man who is still madly in love with his wife. All is well, until the day he discovers that his wife is cheating on him. It was awarded the Best Film award at the 2020 Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival and it will be screened in French with subtitles in Greek.

The film screenings will take place every Wednesday and the next film up, on June 29, is the emotional drama Lingui which received three awards from film festivals. The film focuses on Amina, a practising Muslim, who lives with her daughter, 15-year-old Maria. When Amina learns Maria is pregnant and wants to abort the child, they face an impossible situation in a country where abortion is legally and morally condemned.

Opening July’s screenings is the Danish film Riders of Justice which received eight film awards. Its protagonist is Markus who goes home to his teenage daughter, Mathilde, when his wife dies in a tragic train accident. It seems like an accident until a mathematics geek, who was also on the train, and his two colleagues show up.

More award-winning films will be screened in July including some French, Indian and Palestinian productions. The Larnaca Cinema Society Facebook page has the complete programme.
