Georgiou hailed after winning gold at European Gymnastics Championships

A flurry of congratulations followed Cypriot gymnast Marios Georgiou’s success at the European Championships in Munich, where he won the gold medal in the men’s horizontal bar competition.

President Nicos Anastasiades was among the first public figures who congratulated Georgiou through a Twitter post, calling the win “a historic event and a great honour for Cyprus.”
Despite going into the event with an injury. Georgiou managed to claim gold, scoring,400 points in the final. Lithuania’s Robert Tvorogal and Spain’s Joel Plata won silver and bronze respectively.

House President Annita Demetriou also took to social media to congratulate Georgiou.
“Cyprus at the top of the European sport. A historic success by Marios Georgiou, who won the gold medal at the European Championships. Thank you Marios, you keep making us proud,” she wrote on Twitter and Facebook.

Government spokesman Marios Pelekanos also congratulated the gymnast on Twitter.
“With hard work, perseverance and the help of his entire team, Marios won gold at the European Championships. Congratulations. Very proud,” he said.

Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA) president Andreas Michaelides later joined the chorus of accolades directed at Georgiou.
“Well done Marios! You keep on flying high and constantly making us proud! KOA is behind you every step of the way, in your ups and downs, whether it is winter or summer. Congratulations, lad!” Michaelides wrote on his social media accounts.

Prior to his success in Munich, Georgiou, won three gold medals at the Varna World Challenge Cup, that took place between May 16 and 29.
At the recent Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, he also secured a bronze medal in the individual rings competition.

A native of Limassol, Georgiou has been a gymnast since the age of three, when a coach from a nearby gym visited his kindergarten, looking for likely prospects, and saw him dangling from a tree branch.

Limassol mayor Nicos Nicolaides also chimed in on Facebook after the stunning result in Munich.
“Well done, Mario,” he wrote. “Your city thanks you. You have made Cyprus proud! European champion!”

On top of Nicolaides’ congratulations, the Limassol municipality also praised Georgiou in a lengthy post on Facebook.
“After a flawless performance and a final score of 14.400, beating Lithuania’s Robert Tvorogal and Spain’s Joel Plata, Marios won the gold medal.
“It is the first time in the history of the event that Cyprus manages to take home a gold medal. The Limassol municipality warmly congratulates its champion who once again made us all proud.”
