The European Capital of Culture Pafos2017 will offer two unique musical events on Sunday starting with a performance by the Gerausch Percussion Duo under the name Across Continents at En Plo Gallery at 11am.
The duo consists of the two virtuoso musicians Marios Nicolaou and Alexandros Giovanos. Together the two have performed concerts on our island, Greece, Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
For this concert, which travels across continents, the duo will firstly stay in Europe with works by the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach, then pass by Asia, Africa, South and North America and end up again in Europe with works by the Romanian-born, Greek-French composer Iannis Xenakis.
The musical action will move to Ibrahim’s Khan at 8.30pm for Janus – a musical composition for violin and cello accompanied by animation screenings and video art.
The project studies the Khan as an allegory for the political and social reality that once made the coexistence between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities possible. This audiovisual presentation studies, on various levels, the Khan and its transition from a meeting point to a deserted site and the possibility of it returning to its original state. Different techniques are employed in the project as a metaphor for the possibility of the co-existence between people of different backgrounds.
Music for the project is composed by Zacharias Moustakis, while Chrysostomos Neophytou (who is also the artistic director) takes on the violin and Thibaut Verbe accompanies him on the cello. Sound engineering is by Vincent Rioux, and visuals are by Yiannis Sakellis and Charalambos Margaritis.
