September brings with it back to school marketing, a change of season and – when it comes to beverages – a whole range of beers. But the beers don’t just show up unattended, they come with their own festival and musical acts.
Nicosia is known for its beer festival ‘Septemberfest’ and Paphos has also been getting in the swing of things with its own festival at the medieval castle – although Paphos does its thing a little earlier in the year. And now it is time for Limassol to get in on the fun, after all it’s known as a city that takes its fun seriously.
The festival, which will run from Friday until Sunday, will feature over 150 types of beer from around the world. Just to mention a few, you can expect to taste home-grown Keo and Carlsberg as well as venturing out with Amstel, Becks, Heineken and Budweiser. There will also be lots more beer names that are not so well-known to us, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t stand up to the rest.
Now for entertainment and how the festival’s live shows will make up your weekend night life.
The festival will kick off with two local bands, Sardam and The Decoys. Sardam are a six-piece cover band that came together in 2015 to perform mainly Greek covers. The all-male band put all their passion and energy into their stage performances and remind us of some great melodies gone by. The Decoys are a four-piece rock and blues band based in Limassol. The band perform at weddings, parties, bars and everything in between, so if the faces look familiar, you have probably bumped into them performing before.
Saturday brings with it Greek band Koza Mostra, who are famous for their Eurovision Song Contest entry Alcohol is Free and their kilt-wearing abilities. The band fuses ska, punk, and rock music together with the style of Balkan folk music such as Macedonian Greek music and rebetiko. The night also includes a musical programme prepared by the Kiklos Mousiki music stage in Limassol.
But the highlights of the musical programme come on Sunday, when Greek singer Babis Stokas, Greek band Mble and local band Prospectus will make sure the first Limassol Beer Festival is one that we will remember.
Stokas, who was recently a judge on The Voice of Greece, is a singer and songwriter who was part of the rock band Pyx Lax. When the band split in 2004 he continued on a musical road of his own, and now continues to entertain fans.
The night will rock on with Mble, who are celebrating their 20th year of touring this year. The band’s singer, Georgia Kefala, truly gives Mble its unique sound and energetic stage presence.
If you are a rock fan, then you will have surely seen Prospectus before. The seven-member band are known for electrifying performances and are considered the best Greek-rock cover band on the island. All you have to do is rock with them.
The festival will also include a children’s playground with bouncy castle, clowns and face painting so the kids can play while you drink responsibly. And there will also be a beer-drinking competition with lots of prizes to be won.
