Parliament bans dragnet fishing

PROFESSIONAL fishermen were in jubilant mood yesterday after lawmakers banned dragnet fishing in Cypriot waters.

A group had gathered outside the parliament, where legislators were voting on a bill drafted by AKEL to ban the practice.

A dragnet is a net dragged along the sea bed which traps small fish and other small sea-life.

Fishermen had been up in arms over government intentions to issue licences for dragnet fishing, a move they said would drive them out of business. The majority use smaller, traditional nets, fishing mostly for whitebait.

The law passed yesterday aims to safeguard the fishermen’s income while also protecting marine life.
