Police rescue swimmers

Police had to rescue two swimmers who were caught out at sea on Tuesday evening at Famagusta’s Cape Greco.

A 20-year-old Russian and 23-year-old Ukrainian, both men, had to be pulled out in an area known by locals as “the caves” that has a rocky terrain and difficult access points.

A member of the public informed police at 6.45pm the two men were spotted between the caves, unable to get out. They most likely jumped in the water, police said.

Authorities said the swimmers must have failed to gauge the conditions properly and were buffeted by strong winds and choppy waters.

They were taken to Famagusta general hospital where they were treated for bruises and were released on the same day.
