Arrest warrant for former CB governor

Former CB governor Athanasios Orphanides

An arrest warrant was issued on Friday for former Central Bank governor Athanasios Orphanides after he failed to appear in court in for a case which involved €400,000 worth of bank bonds purchased by a Limassol resident.

The judge decided to issue an arrest warrant for Orphanides after he had been summoned but neither he nor his lawyer were present in court.

An international arrest warrant is due to be issued for his arrest as he is currently in the United States. Court is due to reconvene on November 14 to ascertain whether the former Central Bank governor has been arrested.
