Music by the sea

By Maria Gregoriou

Tomorrow if you are heading to the beach why not enjoy some music too.

There are three musical performances which may take your fancy, one in Larnaca and three in Limassol.

Let’s start with the Larnaca one, which starts at 4pm so you might still be in your swimwear.

Gadjo Dilo will be performing at Ammos Beach Bar on Makenzy Beach.

The six-member band came together in 2009 with the sole purpose of reanimating the Manouche gypsy jazz musical tradition.

The band’s source of inspiration is the great gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, who has been characterised by nearly all the great jazz musicians as a genius.

Their love for the guitarist is very much explored in the band’s debut album, Manouche de Grec, on which they also save some love for their other passion – rembtiko folk songs.

The musicians will take the audience back to the 30s and 40s when they play tracks from their 2013 album.

Moving to Limassol you are spoilt for choice when it comes to top notch names from the Greek music scene.

If you want to enjoy some music travelling on the wind swirling around an ancient theatre, head to Curium where Alkistis Protopsalti will perform at 9pm.

Protopsalti, who has given performances with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra lately on the island, will give this one under the name The Colours of Greece.

The Greek singer has been active in the alternative musical arena since 1975. That makes a 40 year career and she is showing no signs of retiring any time soon.

For a more party mood, try Greek singers Thanos Petrelis (who will be singing at Breeze at 10pm) and Stavento (at Dolce Club at 11pm).

Petrelis – who came to fame after taking part in the Greek reality show Fame Story – has released four albums and a bunch of singles. The singer is involved in popular music.

If you watched the latest talent show The Voice of Greece you will surely know Michalis Kouinelis, member of the Greek hip-hop band Stavento.

Michalis and the rest of the gang will be at Dolce Club from 11pm. The three piece band is well known for introducing new elements into the Greek hip-hop scene. They also frequently perform with other artists, such as our very own Ivi Adamou, giving new musicians the chance to be heard.
