I know that I will receive some criticism of my poor Greek. I accept that criticism as legitimate. However, I believe it is very unfair that the two cinema chains, K-Cineplex and Rio, have, for the last couple of years, opted to screen most Disney-Pixar films almost exclusively dubbed into Greek, with very few screening times in the original English.
I understand and accept that those movie-goers who do not have a good grasp of English should be able to enjoy dubbed versions of Disney-Pixar films, especially young children. It wouldn’t be fair to limit the experience of watching some of Disney’s finest works to English speakers. However, the cinema chains should realise that it is both inconvenient and unfair for those movie-goers who wish to watch these films with their original dialogue. This is especially the case for half-Cypriots like me. Other bi-cultural Cypriots who are fully bilingual probably also feel that it is unfair that they can’t enjoy these pictures in English.
I hope that the two cinema chains will offer us the choice of watching the latest Pixar offering, “Inside Out”, which is already a front runner for Oscars, in English as well as Greek. I already missed “Brave”, “Monsters University” and “Big Hero 6” and several others because of the failure to do so. What are we supposed to do if this practise of screening the movies exclusively in Greek continues? Buy a DVD every time?
