THE road transport department (RTD) has started renewing road taxes as of Thursday, the Transport ministry said.
The tax can be paid through the RTD’s website or at cooperative and commercial banks, citizens’ bureau centres, district post offices or at the RTD.
A valid MOT road-worthiness certificate and car insurance are necessary for renewal.
The deadline is March 10 after which a €10 fine will be imposed plus 10 per cent of the tax amount.
Owners who wish to immobilise their cars, or whose cars have been recycled, need to submit the relevant applications and certificates to the RTD. If they fail to do so, “the obligation for payment of the amount corresponding to the road tax continues to exist as a civil debt owed to the Republic,” the announcement said.
Vehicle owners have the option to pay for the whole year or for six months. As of mid-2016, vehicle owners will also have the possibility to pay the road tax quarterly.

January 8, 2016 at 21:51I paid mine online yesterday but to register had to make up an address as mine was not listed as an option to tick and you cannot type in your own address. I don’t have a house number now so presumably don’t exist. What I cannot understand is that it is not mandatory to pay until March – Why? I could understand 14 days grace but months! Presumably the government doesn’t need the money. I have religiously paid immediately every year, perhaps next year I shouldn’t bother.

We got through this procedure back in 2012 when we exported my wife’s car abroad. They kept it as ‘active’ for well over a year and it is still in their computer system attached to my wife’s ID (this is easy to check from RTD web site).

January 8, 2016 at 14:50I guess they’ll wait to announce the discount till the day after I pay mine! Scrap this stupid tax! Or at least use the money to repair the roads! Instead they have filled Limassol with the ridiculous road humps destroying our cars.

January 8, 2016 at 08:49This is not for village cars running on heating diesel. Nor does it apply to elderly villagers without driving licences/MoT or insurance. !2 to 18 years olds are also exempt (outside the main towns). I can’t understand why CM gets these facts wrong!!!!

January 8, 2016 at 12:51That’s the beauty of living here, village life at it’s best. My late brother in law lived in a village for the last 20 years of his life, never paid road tax, insurance, no seat belts, no mot. but he never drove outside the village.Coffee shop to home.
