More live jazz is coming up to Paphos with an evening of tunes by virtuoso saxophonist and clarinetist Giannis Diskos, part of the popular Greek band Imam Baildi. Giannis will collaborate for the first time with well-known pianist Giorgos Morfitis for a performance that combines the music tradition of the Balkans with the sound of modern jazz.
From Edessa, Christos has been involved in music since he was young. He grew up in a musical family, listening to the music of north Greece and the Balkans. He has participated in numerous Greek recordings and has performed next to important Greek singers.
In addition to being part of Imam Baildi since the creation of the group, with which he has performed in major international festivals, the clarinetist/saxophonist is also a founding member of Chouska Ensemble.
Cypriot Morfitis is a jazz and Latin pianist who after studying in Havana and at the Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam returned to Cyprus where he now performs regularly with different bands and teaches at the ARTE Music Academy.
His main music project is Macumba, a band performing original compositions in a Latin style, while he also directs and conducts The Paphos Big Band.
The two musicians will put together their diverse musical influences, bringing closer the worlds of tradition and jazz as they playfully rearrange well-known folk tunes, as well as compositions from the repertoire of contemporary Jazz and world music. Oriental modes, jazz harmony and Latin grooves will create a unique and exciting musical combination.
Special Guests will be joining the jazz duet for a few pieces.
