March comes in with a bang at Rialto Theatre, with a whole series of events including plays, concerts and other artistic performances.
The new month’s cultural agenda will open with the second National Monodrama Showcase which, following an open call which drew an overwhelming response from local artists and playwrights, will stage seven monodramas (i.e. plays featuring only a single actor) by Cypriot directors for the first time at the Rialto.
These include The Whore Upstairs with Medea Hanna, directed by Agis Paikos, La Poupée with Andrie Hadjichristodoulou, directed by Yiannis Minou, Carmen with Natalia Panayiotou, That Time with Marina Makri, Letters to Tennessee with Yola Klitou, directed by Anthoullis Dimosthenous, Lady Lazarus Reinvented with Monika Meleki, and Eleni Volume IV with Marios Ioannou, directed by Achim Wieland.
On March 5th, we have a production of The Happy One, based on the award-winning novel by Marina Karagatsi and directed by Dimitri Tarlow. The play will transport its audience to the home of iconic Greek writer M. Karagatsis. Set over three sleepless nights, and viewed through the eyes of his little daughter, the play will bring to life all that haunted and hurt one of the most well-known families in Greece.
Later on, a unique concert will take place with the Symphonic Band of Strovolos Municipality – European University Cyprus and the Wind Ensemble of Christopher Newport University from Virginia. The 85-member band will present a diverse repertoire on March 6th from the world of folk, rock, jazz and gospel music, as well as Latin selections, fitting in with the Carnival period.
More performances to look forward to in March include one of Edward Albee’s most acclaimed plays, The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?, which won a Tony Award in 2002, and a live broadcast from the stage of Almeida Theatre, the new NT Live production of The Tragedy of King Richard II by William Shakespeare, towards the end of the month.
