Nicosia new underground carpark finally opens

The long-awaited Omiros Avenue underground carpark has finally been completed and pending final checks it will soon be available to the public, Nicosia municipality announced on Friday.

The project offers 147 much-needed parking spots, including eight for people with disabilities, in the heart of the busy city centre.

The additional parking spots will make the old city much more accessible, especially on busy Friday and Saturday evenings.

The road and footpaths above the carpark were reopened earlier this year after construction began in May 2018.

The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development Programme 2014-2020, the state budget and the municipality of Nicosia.

It is part of the larger project of upgrading Eleftheria Square and the surrounding roads which began in 2011. The EU has said that as long as it is completed by 2023 funding remains secure.
