Exhibition looks at luck as cosmic knowledge

juxtaposed still life, 2021web

Tapper Bar in Limassol enters the new year with an exhibition, the first solo show of artist Yeti. From January 6 to 16, Yeti will showcase paintings and ceramics from his most recent work. Titled Luck is Cosmic Knowledge, it explores universal truths, such as rules of perspective and the relation of micro and macro dimensions.

“The artist places comprehensive ideas into familiar contexts,” say organisers, “shrunk cosmic objects exist next to enlarged everyday items, such as lemons, toilet paper, lamps and paper books. Platonic shapes and domestic objects give the impression of familiarity, while the vivid colour palette and reversed perspectives create an artificial, imaginary setting. Yeti’s interplay between light and shading recalls the light from a screen monitor, while on other occasions light is violent and harsh like the flash from an explosion or the omnipotent rays of an overbearing sun.”

Some of the works project the artist’s exploration of shame regarding sex and erotic desire. Other works, such as Reap As You Sow, allude to the famous proverb and are used by the artist as a public reminder: same rules apply to all, from atoms in the depths of the human body to the core of the Earth and the Suns out there.

“From writing on trains to creating murals,” add organisers, “Yeti has always had a strong interest in public art and the urban landscape”. As a teenager, Yeti started tagging public spaces and soon turned to graffiti and street art. Since 2015, he has extended his creative practice to working with clay, acrylics, oil paints, 3D sculptures and digital drawings. Yeti almost never sketches prior to painting. The compositions are created organically, allowing a degree of randomness to take over. The aesthetics of street art are deeply rooted into his art, as his paintings are often characterised by multi-dimensional compositions and elements from pop culture.

These days, Yeti lives and works between Cyprus and Greece, and is currently studying at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA). In 2022, he is ready to take the art world presenting his creations solo along with a drawing workshop part of the exhibition on January 9 between 4pm and 6pm.
