Greece’s ambassador to Cyprus Theocharis Lalakos delivered to Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou on Monday a copy of the flag used by the Cypriots who fought in the 1821 Greek revolution for independence from the Ottoman rule.

Copies of the flag will be given to all schools, Prodromou said as a symbol of the significance of the 200th anniversary of the Greek uprising. It would also serve as a reminder “of how close Cyprus is to the fate of the rest of Hellenism”, he said.

Lalakos said that the flag of the Cypriot fighters is a constant reminder of the unity of the Greek nation in the struggles it waged, and of the fraternal ties that unite Greek and Cypriot Hellenism. The ambassador congratulated the education minister and the government on the initiative to use the banner as an inspiration for Cypriot pupils.
