Director general of finance ministry heads to Ecofin

Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides on Friday welcomed the European Commission’s forecasts for the Cypriot economy, viewing them as a validation of the country’s recovery and future prospects.

Director general of the finance ministry George Panteli will represent Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides at the Eurogroup and Ecofin meetings taking place on Monday and Tuesday.

During the Eurogroup ministers will discuss the economic situation and the coordination of the fiscal policy in the Eurozone given the war in Ukraine, the Banking Union and the enhanced surveillance report on Greece.

They will also discuss during Ecofin the economic and financial impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia after its military offensive against Ukraine, and will be briefed on the decisions taken during the informal European Council that was held in Versailles.

Furthermore, they will look into the proposal of the European Commission about the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and will discuss the proposal concerning the achieved world agreement, at the OECD level, by which multinational companies are subject to a minimum excise rate equivalent to 15 per cent under the EU law.

The ministers will be briefed by the European Commission about its budgetary orientation for 2023 and the course of the work done as regards the review of the economic governance framework.

Petrides announced on Saturday he had tested positive for Covid-19.
