As soon as April rolls in a new cultural calendar awaits at Limassol’s most established theatre venue. Rialto Theatre has prepared another month of performances ranging from dance and film to concerts with big Greek stars. Launching the month’s events is the 15th Cyprus Ballet and Contemporary Dance Competition 2022 on April 2 and 3.

The Cyprus Ballet and Contemporary Dance Competition gives the chance to young Cypriot dancers to unveil their talent and compete for scholarships, prizes and participations in international professional groups, seminars and other events. This two-day competition is an institution that greatly contributes to the development and progress of Dance in Cyprus.

A day later and the imagined dialogues between Leonardo da Vinci and Lady Gioconda will come to life through an adaptation of Jules Tasca’s play. Alpha Square and actors Andreas Araouzos and Christina Marouchou will present a staged reading in English of the play and the tales behind the most well-known painting in the world.

Then between April 8 and 16, the 20th edition of the Cyprus Film Days International Festival will take place presenting a variety of films, screened at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol and Zena Palace Cinema in Nicosia. An eclectic international competition section, world-acclaimed film premieres, Cypriot productions, screenings and events for children and youth make up this year’s official International Film Festival of Cyprus, dedicated to fiction feature films.

The festival will also host, for the first time in physical presence, the 3rd Dot on the Map Industry Days, a co-production, education and networking platform, organised online in collaboration with Agora Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Greece.

Next up is another National Theatre Live broadcast. Filmed live from the Bridge Theatre in London The Book of Dust – La Belle Sauvage, adapted by Bryony Lavery and directed by Nicholas Hytner will be screened at Rialto on April 19.

Set twelve years before the epic His Dark Materials trilogy, this gripping adaptation revisits Phillip Pullman’s fantastical world in which waters are rising and storms are brewing. Two young people and their demons, with everything at stake, find themselves at the centre of a terrifying manhunt. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child lies the fate of the future. The screening will be in its original language with subtitles in English.

Plenty more entertainment and fun await at Rialto Theatre this month including a local production play, an opera cinema screening, a music concert and a performance by one of the most-loved Greek pop singers, Panos Mouzourakis, and his band.
