Moonwalk event in Protaras brings music to the seafront

Its peak season may have passed yet crowds still gather in Protaras on the weekend to enjoy September’s calmer beaches. Besides its blue waters and traditional taverns, Protaras has more to offer and this month a returning event organised by the Paralimni Youth will welcome musicians and visitors to a unique walk under the light of the full moon.

Moonwalk is an event that once a year transforms Protaras’ seafront promenade into a kind of open-air music festival. Paralimni Youth collaborates with local musicians from all around the island, and will see bands and musical ensembles set up 26 mini stages across the Protaras promenade and perform live to passersby. The musicians all play around the same time throughout the evening and visitors can walk up and down the promenade to listen to them live. This year, the event returns after three years on September 10.

All the way from Fig Tree Bay up to The Golden Coast, near Kalamies Restaurant, the Moonwalk will host some 120 musicians for guests to enjoy. The great thing about it is there is no official start of the walk; join the fun in the middle of the promenade and follow the music in any direction. For those who want to experience Moonwalk in its full scale, the total length of the walk is 5km and could take around two-and-a-half hours to complete, including the music stops.

Anything from traditional vocal ensembles and Greek folk music to jazz, pop and swing tunes will be heard. Participating are well-known Cypriot bands, emerging young artists, duos, trios and quartets to add a diverse touch to the event. The music will begin at 8pm sharp, a little after the full moon will rise from the sea, and until 11pm the live music will continue.

The Cyprus Astronomy Organisation will also set up camp at Moonwalk with two telescopes that the public can use for free to see the moon and the last of summer’s evening stars. Make the most of the warm Cypriot evenings before chillier days come.
