The government has increased the rent allowance provided to those living in condemnable refugee housing in Limassol by €200, citing the difficult housing conditions prevailing in the district.

The beneficiaries of the scheme who reside in blocks of flats in the Limassol District will be granted a rent allowance of €600 for a one-bedroom apartment, €800 for a two-bedroom apartment and €1,000 for a three-bedroom apartment.

The rent allowance will be granted to those beneficiaries who will participate in the ktiZO scheme, based on the type of apartment they own in the existing blocks of flats.

Furthermore, the town planning department is formulating a programme for free transportation and storage of personal belongings and household equipment for the residents of the first 20 apartment buildings that will be demolished and rebuilt. Those who need help with transportation and storage can contact the Department at 22409541.

The announcement added that officers of the department informed the residents of the 20 apartment buildings assessed as the most dangerous, during a face-to-face campaign where they explained the process in detail. Furthermore, specific cases of beneficiaries were recorded to find individual solutions and provide them with maximum assistance and facilitation. This will be followed in the next period by a briefing of beneficiaries in the remaining 23 blocks of flats to be vacated and demolished with a timeframe of 24 months.

The interior ministry has secured assistance in terms of money, goods, services and voluntary contributions from private organisations and NGOs, which have rushed to support the State’s great effort to provide safe and decent housing for the beneficiaries of apartments in refugee settlements.

Details of the assistance to be provided to the beneficiaries will be announced in the coming days.
