Professor Leontios Kostrikis has resigned from the advisory committee on coronavirus, a health ministry spokesperson confirmed on Monday.

Kostrikis, head of the University of Cyprus’ laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology, cited a heavy workload for the resignation.

Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou had initially not accepted Kostrikis’ resignation, but the professor insisted, after thanking the minister for his trust in him.

“The minister expresses his thanks to Mr Kostrikis for his contribution to the management of the pandemic so far, looking forward to the continuation of the cooperation,” the spokesperson said.

Ioannou had appointed Kostrikis and the other members of the advisory committee.

The ministry clarified that they would remain in contact with Kostrikis and seek his advice based on his expertise if necessary.
