An Olympic fencer’s guide to competitive foil

Always exercise responsibly and safely. Ideally under the guidance of a trained fitness and/or medical professional, who can match the exercise or sports regimen to your present level of fitness.

In this video, US Olympic fencer Alexander Massialas gives us an overview to competitive foil.

Massialas, who is of Greek and Taiwanese descent, was a silver medallist at the 2015 World Fencing Championships. At the 2016 Summer Olympics he competed in the Men’s foil and earned a silver medal; he also earned a bronze medal in Men’s team foil.

There are three forms of modern fencing, each of which uses a different weapon and with different rules; thus the sport itself is divided into three competitive scenes: foil, épée, and sabre. Most competitive fencers choose to specialise in one weapon only.

Competitive fencing is also one of the five activities that has been featured in every modern Olympic Games, the other four being athletics, cycling, swimming and gymnastics.
