The push to establish sustainable seaweed farming in Europe

This video looks at Europe’s growing seaweed sector, meeting the Continent’s farmers trying to put the industry on a more sustainable footing.

The majority of the world’s seaweed cultivation occurs within Asia, where seaweed farming is long-established. So far, Europe has not had a tradition in this area, but that might change under the reach of the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy, part of the EU’s new Green Deal.

The rewards of establishing the sector among Continental farmers, are many.

As a more eco-friendly source of food, seaweed has excellent nutritional values, while also beneficial for the environment and a less wasteful crop to farm. It is relatively easy to grow, does not take up any farmland nor require fresh water.
