Walking tour discovers Nicosia’s colours

The capital’s urban landscape has an ocean of shapes, textures, infrastructures and even people. Perhaps its most distinct and charming neighbourhood is the old town – a place with historical architecture, monuments and full of stories. Yet even in this part of town that appears homogenous at first glance, every street tells a different tale through its buildings, ruins and walls. One new element that has been decorating central Nicosia in recent years is the arrival of street art and an upcoming tour will explore the murals that have transformed Nicosia.

“For many years,” say the organisers, “the old town of Nicosia was associated with ruination. However, during the past ten years, Nicosia’s old town has started to transform. The city’s walls are being painted with colourful images, expressing new emerging visions and aspirations, as well as the shifting mentalities of its communities.”

Led by archaeologist and tour guide Antigone Michael and street artist Derviş Zeybek, this tour in English will take participants on a walk through the old town, crossing the checkpoint, to find old and new street art. The walk will begin at the Home for Cooperation at 6pm, where it will also end.

This city tour is organised by the Home for Cooperation project, implemented by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research with the financial support of the Active Citizens Fund and through sharing Nicosia’s street art aims to show the power of these creative expressions that connect people.

“As we celebrate the 10 years of our collective home, we invite you to a special walking tour to explore the street art that has transformed Nicosia. Embedding creativity into a social process has also been one of Home for Cooperation’s goals, to nurture a multicultural ground showing how determined collectives can transform both the space and mentalities at a moment and at a space of transition.”
