Twenty days jail for drunk driver

Famagusta district court on Friday sentenced a 48-year-old man to 20 days in jail after finding him guilty of driving seven times over the legal limit.

It also suspended his driving licence for 45 days from the day of his release from prison and penalised him with five points.

In a written statement, police said the man was arrested on August 2. Police had been called to the scene of a traffic collision on Kapparis Avenue in Paralimni in which under conditions being investigated, the man’s car collided with a car driven by a 57-year-old man.

There were no injuries, but both cars sustained minor damage. Both drivers underwent a preliminary test for alcohol with the 57-year-old testing negative and the defendant positive.

The result of the second test was 138μg%, nearly seven times the legal limit of 22μg%.
