Coronavirus: Mobile vaccination unit in central Larnaca on Saturday

A mobile Covid-19 vaccination unit will operate in central Larnaca on Saturday as authorities press on with efforts to boost vaccination coverage in Cyprus amid growing concerns a recent uptick in cases will gather momentum.

The mobile unit will be in place at Europe Square, on Larnaca’s Phinikoudes promenade, from 8am to 1pm, the health ministry said.

Following consultations between Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas and Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, it was agreed that health ministry officials will also be on site to brief members of the public about the benefits of vaccination and answer queries and concerns.

The mobile unit will administer first, second and third jabs as follows: First dose for people aged 12 and over; second dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to those aged 12 and over who have received the first dose at least three weeks prior and booster jabs to those aged 50 and over provided six months have passed since their second dose

All must present identification documents (ID, passport, aliens registration card). Those wishing to receive a second or third jab must also present their vaccination card.

Hajipantelas, the ministry’s permanent secretary Christina Yiannaki and the mayor will also be at the vaccination site.

The announcement came as cabinet approved the administration of a booster dose to everyone aged over 18 who has received their second anti-coronavirus vaccine six months previously – extending it from the current 50 and over group, as well as special health groups.

A total 82.3 per cent of the adult population had received the first dose of an anti-coronavirus jab as of November 3, while 80 per cent of adults had completed their vaccination.

In addition, about 60 per cent of the eligible population have also received the booster dose, a health ministry advisor said on Monday.

According to data form the health ministry, approximately 35 per cent of people hospitalised with Covid-19 are vaccinated.
