science cafe 29 march 2022

Kition planetarium and observatory will hold an online science café on Tuesday night with a female Cypriot analogue astronaut to discuss women and girls in science.

Eleonora Lydia Kaiser became the first Cypriot analogue astronaut, a term for someone simulating a deep space mission on Earth who participated in experiment in the analogue astronaut training centre last year, the press release read.

“Her achievements inspired and continue to inspire the new generation in Cyprus and abroad,” it added. The science café will take place at 8pm on Zoom.

The organisation reminded the public that all meetings of Science Café sessions are free of charge and everyone can join using codes for the meeting which are published on their website.

Next month, the online science café will take place at 8pm on April 26 with guest speaker Professor Raul Perez Enriquez from University of Sonora in Mexico under the title “The Gnomon and its Solstice Shadows: A Universal Paradigm?”.

In the press release, Kition planetarium and observatory invited those interested in science to book a private programme, which are available until the end of April.

Participants will have the opportunity to “live the experience of unique planetarium programmes, interesting collections of geological samples and space exhibits” while they will also learn to observe the planets and other “gems of the night sky” with professional telescopes.

The astronomy courses for beginners “Read the Sky” and “The Sky is Alive” will take place in April.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the organisation said, bookings are available for up to ten attendees per session while all participants must follow the measures and present their ID/Passport together with their Safe Pass to be accepted in every session.

For more information on the courses or for people who would like to organise an astronomy or science related educational event visit the Kition planetarium and observatory website.
