Autopsy determines dead baby, found in rubbish bag, was not born alive (Updated)

The new-born baby boy found at Solomou Square in Nicosia on Sunday was not born alive state pathologists have confirmed.

The two officials who carried out the autopsy on Monday afternoon said that there were no internal or external injuries but that the body was in a state of decay. The baby was near full-term and was still born, according to the experts.

Investigations began on Sunday when the body was found wrapped in a plastic bag at the public toilets near the bus station in the capital.

The official charged with overseeing the sanitation of the toilets near the bus station said that nothing untoward was identified on either Saturday afternoon or on Sunday morning when scheduled cleanings took place, leading some to believe that the dead baby was transferred there later in the day.

Officers have returned to the site, and Alphanews reported that police are sifting through CCTV footage in the area, while one line of investigation reported on Monday morning led officers to the Pournara migrant reception centre.

Local media said that DNA samples are under analysis.

The mother has not yet been identified.
