Three people charged after Easter bonfire fracas in Emba

Three people have been charged in Paphos for attacking a police officer and resisting arrest, the force said on Wednesday.

According to Paphos CID chief Michalis Nicolaou, the charges include resisting arrest, attack, causing actual bodily harm to a police officer, attacking a police officer, stealing handcuffs and causing unrest.

The three people are a man aged 26 who was remanded in police custody and a further two people aged 51 and 25.

The first person was arrested on Holy Saturday, Nicolaou said, after police asked the driver of a vehicle parked near Emba’s church to stop sounding its horn which was causing public disturbance. The suspect, who was among the four passengers of the car, allegedly pushed the officer.

According to the police, that day, the 26-year-old allegedly managed to escape the officers with the help of two other people, aged 51 and 25.

He was later arrested on Easter Sunday and was brought before the Paphos District Court on Monday.

The other two were arrested later.

All three have been charged in writing to appear in court at a later date.
