Paphos bus company calls off threat of further strike action (updated)

Employees of the Paphos Bus Company Osypa on Wednesday called off a scheduled strike after they were informed the transport ministry had paid their salaries for May.

Osypa workers held a two-hour work stoppage between 8am to 10am to protest over a delay in receiving their salaries for the previous month.

District union secretary of Sek Petros Demosthenous, had said the employees were ready to escalate their action if they did not get paid immediately.

However, later in the day, the workers’ unions were informed by the company that the ministry has made the payment to cover staff salaries.

The company reportedly cited a liquidity problem and claims that the state is not paying the entire government contribution.

The employees had warned that if they do not get paid by the afternoon then on Thursday morning they would go on an indefinite strike.

Both Sek and Peo unions said the workers were not responsible for the strike.

“We want to apologise to the passengers for the inconvenience and point out that the staff bears no responsibility,” the two unions said.
