Crossing points ‘are not borders’

Cyprus’ crossing points are not borders, but a temporary arrangement, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou said on Monday, following reports regarding efforts to introduce customs checks.

Turkish Cypriot authorities have put forward proposals regarding the operation of the crossing points, the negotiator told CyBC radio, adding that they are expected to submit further details.

He clarified that the Greek Cypriot side has immediately made it clear that any change should take into account that the crossing points are not border checkpoints but a temporary arrangement. The regulations of the green line should also be followed, Menelaou added.

In recent days, Turkish Cypriot “officials” said they could convert the crossing points so that those who cross know they are entering the so-called ‘TRNC’ while the creation of infrastructure will be carried out by private companies.

Reports have suggested that, according to the Turkish Cypriot plans people who cross will also be taxed.

Nine crossing points operate across the island, with two, Strovilia and Pergamos, being under the jurisdiction of the British military bases.

During the pandemic, the operation of the crossing points was suspended before they re-opened on June 4 last year following an agreement between President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar to synchronise Covid-related measures.
