The yellow alert, the first for high temperatures issued this summer, is in force from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm, with the met office warning that inland maximum temperatures are expected to rise to around 40C

In its early morning forecast on Wednesday, the met office added that temperatures will remain above the average for the time of year on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Thursday will be mainly fine, although clouds which develop at midday and early in the afternoon may lead to isolated rain, mainly in the mountains, it said.

Temperatures will rise to 40C inland, around 35C on the south and north coasts, around 33C on the east coast and 30C on the west coast and in the mountains.

Wednesday night will be mainly fine, although at intervals there will be increased low cloud and possible patchy fog at dawn, mostly on the coast. Temperatures will fall to 24C inland and on the east coast, around 23C on the remaining coasts and around 20C in the mountains.

Thursday and Friday will be mainly fine, however at intervals there may be local increased cloud, mainly in the mountains. Temperatures will remain at the same levels, above the seasonal average.

Saturday will be mainly fine, with above average temperatures again.
