The forest department is calling on the public to avoid any actions over the next two days that might cause a fire.

It appeals to the public to respect nature and the environment and not to leave litter behind during their outings.

It also reminds that it is illegal to light a fire without a permit within or at a distance of up to two kilometres from the edges of state forests, as well as in rural areas, and that this action constitutes an offence punishable by imprisonment up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both.

A special appeal was made to owners of country houses who plan to barbeque to do so in a specially arranged area that is completely safe and to make sure that the charcoals are extinguished at the end of the cooking.

“Owners of country houses who intend to assign foreign workers or third parties to clear the yard of the house of grass must explain to them that lighting a fire is strictly prohibited,” it added.

If anyone perceives smoke or fire they should call immediately the free line 1407 or the emergency number 112, fire department.
