Cyprus is leading the way for Montessori education in Europe, as owner of local nurseries was re-elected on the board of a European association promoting the child-centred method of education.

Carola Lång-Howard, Principal and owner of the UK accredited Little Gems Montessori Nurseries in Larnaca and Nicosia, was recently re-elected as Board Member and Lead for Montessori Europe’s Sustainability Working Group for a further four years.

The election took place at the Montessori Europe (ME) annual Congress in Amsterdam at Metis Montessori Lyceum.

It was the first face-to-face meeting for all board members who had only seen each other online for the past two years, and the first face-to-face congress since the ME congress in Dublin in 2019, a relevant press release said.

After the election, Carola who has been an active ME board member for the past two years said, “It is an absolute honour to have been re-elected onto this board, to continue to work with this dedicated and diverse group of Montessori professionals on this very important subject”.

During the congress in Amsterdam, Carola presented to fellow Montessori practitioners from across Europe, and was proud to demonstrate how our early years children in Cyprus are participating in sustainability practises, strategies and activities across the island.

“Delegates admired the proactive and innovative approaches used to teach sustainability in Montessori classrooms whilst also involving and serving the wider community,” the press release said.

Sustainability has been part of the curriculum at Little Gems Montessori since 2014 where both schools have been recognised as ECO schools. Carola Lång-Howard has also established a training centre, Little Gems Training Centre, and offers professional guidance and training for all early year’s teachers interested in the Montessori approach to education.

Little Gems Montessori Nursery is based in Nicosia and Larnaca and provides for children between the ages of two to six years old.  For further information contact Little Gems by telephone: 22 351319 / 999 50070 / 96 557661.
