Three road transport officials suspended, probe into test irregularities

Three officials from the road transport department were suspended on Thursday as an investigation is ongoing on alleged interference in the department’s system to grant driving licences to people who never showed up for a test.

The case of possible corruption was reported to the police by transport Minister Yiannis Karousos regarding the very high pass rates recorded by certain driving schools.

Initial evidence collected for the case, initially reported by Cybc, showed that the system was interfered with to pass students from specific driving schools. The students, however, had not even undertaken the test at the specific time and date.

According to the complaint, schools from different districts choose to systematically transfer their students to Paphos for a test, although sooner dates are available in other districts.

Meanwhile, Paphos police are awaiting some additional evidence to begin a full investigation of the case, Cyprus News Agency reported.
