North reacts to ‘unacceptable’ references to the Cyprus problem

The ‘foreign ministry’ in the north reacted on Tuesday to the references to the Cyprus problem in the decisions of the International Francophone Organisation.

The organisation ignores the rights of the Turkish Cypriot community in its decisions taken at its 18th Summit held in Djerba, Tunisia on 19-20 November 2020 which contain elements related to the Cyprus problem, said a new statement by the ‘ministry of foreign affairs’.

“The biased approach of the aforementioned organisation, of which the Greek Cypriot side is a unilateral observer member, ignores the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and does not coincide with the current reality in Cyprus”, the statement said.

It further claimed that in Cyprus “there are two peoples with different language, religion and culture and the Turkish Cypriot people have a separate state”.

“The fact that the resolution contains expressions such as ‘reunification of Cyprus, its people and its institutions’, as well as reference to outdated models, is unacceptable to us”.

The announcement explained that “the model of ‘bi-communal, bi-zonal federation’, which has been negotiated for more than 50 years, has finally ended due to the uncompromising attitude of the Greek Cypriot side.” It also reiterates the position on the recognition of sovereign equality, on which the international community is invited to focus
