Cyprus and India will sign bilateral memoranda of understanding and agreements in the fields of military cooperation, energy, and immigration, as part of a visit by the Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to Cyprus, scheduled from December 29 to 31.

“This is a very important visit for us. India is a crucial member of the Commonwealth, and we are joined by parallel historical paths, as well as strong ties,” the foreign ministry spokesperson Demetris Demetriou said on Tuesday.

“The occasion creates the right context to strengthen bilateral ties with India and to further deepen them in areas such as education, economy, security and defence.”

Demetriou added that Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will update Jaishankar on Turkey’s provocations in the eastern Mediterranean region, “particularly those creating obstacles to the Republic of Cyprus.”

“Current regional issues of common interest, as well as ways in which India could play a role in the existing multilateral cooperation framework will also be discussed,” Demetriou concluded.
