Cypriot households spent less than EU average on housing in 2021

At 17.1 per cent, Cyprus had lower household expenditure on housing, water, electricity, natural gas and other fuels in 2021 in comparison with the EU average of 25 per cent, according to Eurostat.

Compared with 2020, the share of these expenses decreased by 0.5 per cent (pp) in the EU and by 1.1 pp in Cyprus, the figures showed.

The second largest share of spending in Cyprus in 2021 was for restaurants and hotels (15.8 per cent, up from 10.2 per cent in 2020).

Food and non-alcoholic beverages accounted for 14.7 per cent of household spending, transport 12.1 per cent, and entertainment and culture 6.8 per cent. Around 5 per cent went on alcohol and tobacco spending and 4.9 per cent on clothing and footwear.

At EU level, the second largest share of expenditure was on food and non-alcoholic beverages.
The third largest category of household expenditure in 2021 in the EU was transport.
