Police warn public of fraudulent email messages

The Cyprus police on Wednesday has issued a statement alerting people to the circulation of fraudulent email messages falsely claiming to originate from the force.

The statement urged individuals to exercise caution and refrain from engaging in any communication or transactions through malicious emails or the suspicious addresses mentioned within.

According to the police, some fraudulent emails also include letters bearing the logos of both the Cyprus police and Interpol, while other mention titles such as the assistant attorney-general, or individuals, like police chief Stelios Papatheodorou.

Furthermore, the fraudulent emails allege that the recipients are involved in various criminal offenses, including cybercrime, child pornography and rape, for which they will be prosecuted.

The statement released on Wednesday reassured that the emails are entirely counterfeit and under no circumstances would such communications be dispatched by the police to anyone.

“These messages constitute an attempt to deceive the public. We urge the community to exercise extreme caution and refrain from responding if they receive such messages,” the statement said.

To verify any pending matters with the police, it also advised people to directly contact the local station.
