Doctor arrested for violating Gesy regulations

The medical association’s ethics board has asked to be briefed about a 62-year-old doctor who was arrested on Tuesday for violating national health scheme Gesy regulations, police said.

In a statement, ethics board chair Michalis Anastasiades said that the medical association will examine the possibility of kickstarting the relevant disciplinary procedures based on the existing legislation.

The suspect was arrested at Larnaca airport upon his arrival in Cyprus, based on testimonies accusing him of operating under the name of a different doctor after his own Gesy contract had ended, and keeping the money for himself.

He is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, theft, forgery and presenting fake documents, as well as corruption-related charges.

A police source told the Cyprus News Agency that a second warrant is pending, against a relative of the suspect whose Gesy account he allegedly operated under.

The second suspect is currently abroad, police said.
