Painting their way to better mental health

1 (9)

Painting Against Prejudice is the title of a new exhibition opening in Nicosia that aims to do exactly what it says on the tin. The Association for the Protection of Mental Health (SPPSY Nicosia), in collaboration with the Work Rehabilitation Units (DYPSY-OKYPY), is organising an exhibition of paintings and ceramics by people with mental health problems. The exhibition will be opened by Health Minister Popi Kanari on Wednesday at the Cultural Centre of Strovolos Municipality.

The showcase is part of the effort to reintegrate people facing mental challenges into society and includes more than 70 works by some 13 artists from all cities (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos). It will run until Friday and all proceeds will be donated to the artists themselves. During the opening event, the Director of the Mental Health Services Department Dr Anna Paradisioti and Ms Kalia Sofokleous (on behalf of the Strovolos Mayor) will make brief addresses.

The exhibition is part of the 4th European Mental Health Week (held from May 22 to 28), organised by the largest pan-European mental health organisation Mental Health Europe. This year’s theme is Mentally Healthy Communities and its aim is to enhance understanding and knowledge about mental health.
