The Limassol municipality and the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CYCERE) on Thursday announced the start of public consultation on the future of Limassol Zoo, which will last until the end of July and will take place both online and in-person at different locations yet to be announced.

According to a statement released by the Limassol municipality, the purpose of the public consultation is to gather the opinions of citizens and stakeholders regarding the future of Limassol Zoo.

“The opinion of the people of Limassol is important to us,” the statement said. “This public consultation is conducted by CYCERE on behalf of the Municipality of Limassol.

“We kindly request that each citizen or representative of an organization completes the questionnaire found at the link https://kykpee.org/limassolzoo.” The first one advocates for its permanent closure and the consequent expansion of a public garden in the area.

The second alternative is the significant upgrade of the zoo, in order for it to become an autonomous and effective educational and research organisation and centre, meeting all the current animal welfare standards.

The latter option also envisions a more focused approach on the local fauna, with special emphasis on the conservation efforts of Cyprus’ protected species.

Finally, the municipality announced that it will host a final meeting on the issue with relevant stakeholders and citizens in September.
