Five arrested in connection with misappropriation of EU funds

Limassol police arrested five people on Thursday in connection with the misappropriation of €72,000 in EU funds at the Department of Merchant Shipping.

Police detained a 42-year-old man, who works at the department and his wife, 26, as well as three foreign nationals, 34, 33, and 24, all women.

The man was responsible for handling research programs funded by the EU. Investigations revealed that companies he had created were allegedly assigned eight different programs.

His wife and the three women were employed at the companies that allegedly received some €72,000 through the merchant shipping department.

Police said the suspects were being investigated in connection with conspiracy to commit a felony, fraud, abuse of power, and money laundering.

They are expected to be brought before court on Friday while police seized computers and various documents for further investigation.
