For the seventh consecutive year, Cyprus is taking part in the Worldwide Endomarch – an information campaign aiming to spread awareness about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, Cyprus News Agency reported on Friday.

The awareness campaign, under the slogan Let’s Τalk Αbout it, is being held in March in 65 countries.

In Cyprus, one in ten women of reproductive age suffer from endometriosis, while worldwide about 200 million women are afflicted with the condition.

According to the Worldwide Endomarch website, it can lead to a lifetime of severe disability and symptoms throughout the entire body, including incapacitating pain, organ failure, several repeat surgeries, infertility, increased risk for cardiovascular disease, increased risk for certain cancers, immune and endocrinological dysfunction, kidney failure, and damage to multiple organs and tissues, including the bowel, bladder, diaphragm, muscles, musculoskeletal structures, nerves, ligaments, lungs and liver.

Heading the awareness campaign in Cyprus is Dr Andreas Stavroullis, gynaecologist and obstetrician and founder of the Endometriosis & Fertility Centre of the American Medical Centre.

Events and actions on the island will focus on raising awareness and providing information to women with the support of personalities such as House president Annita Demetriou, Energy Minister Natasa Pilides, Environment Commissioner Klelia Vasiliou and journalist Christiana Aristotelous.

On March 19, the Endomarch Cyprus team will participate in the Limassol marathon and is asking people of any age and irrespective of gender to join the 5km race.

And on March 26, Stavroullis will hold an open online discussion about the causes and complications of endometriosis, fertility issues and the physical and psychological effects of the condition.
