THREE PEOPLE have died from flu since December 1, while 18 flu cases were classified as “severe”, according to the health ministry.
In a press release issued on Friday, the ministry noted that all three individuals who died had chronic health issues, such as diabetes, asthma or suffered from other serious respiratory and blood disease.
The average age of people hospitalised with life threatening flu symptoms is 62.
Flu activity was on the rise over the last week of December through the third week of January, when reported flu cases started to decline.
According to the release, the virology monitoring network reported that from January 1 to March 8, 138 samples were sent for lab analysis and 67 of those – 48.5 per cent – came back positive for flu.
The majority of those samples – 86 per cent – were presented with Type A flu, subtype H3N2. This strain is the most widespread in Cyprus – an average of 90 per cent of cases reported – and the EU.
