Leaders brief the public ahead of Swiss talks

President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will be meet again in the second half of February

President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci will be holding separate news conferences on Friday ahead of their trip to Switzerland for talks.

Akinci had proposed having a joint conference but he was turned down by Anastasiades who reportedly said there was no reason for that.

Anastasiades’ conference will start at 6.30pm and is expected to last 90 minutes. The president will be answering the questions of seven television reporters. Other journalists will be able to follow the conference in English and Turkish from a special venue at the presidential palace.

Akinci will hold his at 8.30pm and there will be a simultaneous translation in Greek through Facebook on: www.facebook.com/MustafaAkinci2015

The two leaders will travel to Mont Pelerin on Monday for five days of talks on territory and other aspects of the island’s division.

The Greek Cypriot side argues that unless territory was settled, the reunification process could not advance to the next stage.

Akinci on the other hand suggested that a multilateral conference after the Switzerland talks was a foregone conclusion.

Greek Cypriots also ruled out agreeing to any foreign guarantees or troops remaining on the island as part of a settlement.
