A story can come from anywhere

Journalist and awarded children’s book author Melissa Hekkers will run a creative writing workshop for children on Wednesday, that will use the paintings at the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum as inspiration.

The workshop, which is suitable for children from eight to 12-years-old, will divide the participants into two groups. The first group will select a painting from the collection which inspires them and based on that, they will write three or four sentences on the art work. Once the sentences have been written, Hekkers will help the children compose them into the beginning of a story with advice and a group discussion. The next group will then take the beginning of the story and add another paragraph on to the story without knowing or having seen the painting that inspired the children from the first group. This will enable their creativity and inspiration to flow freely, and not be influenced by the image in the selected painting. The next paragraph will then be written by the first group and so on until all the children are satisfied with the result. At the end of the workshop, the two groups get together and read the story out loud and see the painting that inspired it.

The workshop aim is based on the idea that a story can be made out of anything and aspires to stimulate imagination in participating children as well as assisting them into a guided story writing exercise.

Hekkers is the author of a number of award winning children’s books including Crocodile, Flying Across Red Skies, Pupa and her latest My Nicosia Mandala Colouring Book published in 2016.
